Brand-new charity wins 4th-quarter donations

A brand-new charity called Greater Muskegon Support Services, Inc. earned our donations at our December meeting. This group operates out of a church on Jarman Street in Muskegon Heights, providing meals and clothing to children and adults. The organization has big dreams, hoping to expand to veterans services, transportation to jobs, drivers training and more.

Also presenting on Dec. 5 were Supper House and Big Reds Football.

Our next meeting is March 6, 2019, at the Sherman Bowling Center. Bring a friend!

Kids' Food Basket wins for September 2018

Kids' Food Basket has won our donations for the second time with their work to feed children who don't have enough to eat. Our gifts this quarter will help KFB add a fifth school to the list of Muskegon County schools they serve, just as our gifts in June 2017 helped them add a fourth school.

Other nominees this quarter were The Arc Muskegon and Family Promise of Muskegon County.

This quarter we celebrated with the Women of Care of Muskegon County because together we have given over one million dollars to local charities since we got started in 2011. The women's group started two quarters before our group did, but the main reason they out-give us better than 2-to-1 is because there are more of them. So why not bring a friend to our next meeting? It's Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. at the Sherman Bowling Center.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lakeshore wins our donations this quarter

This quarter's donations go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lakeshore. This outstanding organization's mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. BBBS Lakeshore also earned our donations at our first anniversary meeting back in December 2012.

Other nominees this quarter were June 2017 winner Kids' Food Basket and two-time winner Men and Ladies of Honor

If you're a member of Men Who Care, please send your checks made out to BBBS Lakeshore promptly. If you're not a member, why not? Sign up here and help us cross the $300,000 mark this year. It takes only an hour and a hundred bucks four times a year.

HEY Radio Wins! (Finally!)

The fifth time was the charm this past Wednesday for Muskegon Community Radio (Hey Radio), which won our donations for the first quarter of 2018. They plan to use the donations to buy and have installed a backup generator to keep the station on the air during power outages.

Other nominees this quarter were Family Promise of Muskegon County, which has won twice but most recently in 2013, and our June 2014 winner The Arc Muskegon.

Come join us in June and put your name and favorite local charity in the mix!

$10,700 to Step Up

We've given $10,700 to our December 2017 selection, Step Up, bringing our total donations to $260,200. This fine group, which also earned our donations in March 2016, works to provide mentoring, housing, educational guidance and a community with accountability to young adults ages 18-24, primarily those who have aged out of foster care.

Other nominees in December were Family Promise of Muskegon County, which was our second recipient way back in March 2012 and earned our donations again in September 2013, and Muskegon Community Radio (Hey Radio).
